A coordinate system that everyone can come back to

When the evening breeze turns cold, I carry my old telescope up to the roof of my office.

I watch the stars fluttering in the early evening and the crescent moon setting before heading home, and I find this annual routine surprisingly relaxing.

Shortly after ten o'clock, I saw Orion rising for the first time this year. I walked to the west side of the garden and watched it without any obstruction.

Not that I had not seen it at dawn in summer since I sent it off to the western horizon in late spring, but it was a fading figure, and tonight was the first time I had seen it in six months. I busily studied the arrangement of the three stars, the three small stars, and the four stars surrounding them in a rectangle, their individual colors, and the twinkling of their eyes, and felt a sense of relief.

This is something I have experienced every year around this time since I first saw them as a boy on a wintry night, and the impression of these magnificent constellations always seems young and fresh, as if I am seeing them for the first time. To be able to repeat this marvel and praise year after year, and even to repeat it until the day I die, is a privilege reserved for those who are close to the stars.

It is precisely because we enjoy adjusting to the ever-changing world that the time we spend standing back at the unchanging point seems to shine brighter than ever.

Since we are going to take on many challenges without ceasing in the company, I want to cherish a coordinate system that will bring us all back to the same place at this season like stars twinkling equally in the same place.

Just this month we started our 17th season, and I am going to work on those things that change/remain the same, first of all.
